A Chlamydia and Gonorrhea Urine test is done to detect Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae. Both these diseases are generally transmitted through sexual contact with another person who already infected.

What is Chlamydia and Gonorrhea?
Both Chlamydia and gonorrhea are the most common STDs. Many people are infected with these diseases. However, they don’t have any symptoms. These infections affect the genital area of the infected person. It may also cause infection in the eyes, joints, or mucous membranes.
These diseases are caused by bacteria and considered silent/asymptotic infections. The only way you can detect if you have the infection is by taking an STD test near you. Fortunately, these diseases are curable, and the treatment includes only antibiotics.
The reason the test for these diseases is done together is that they often occur together. They come in the category of co-existing infection. If you get infected by one, it will put you at risk of contracting the other as well. That's why it is recommended to get tested for both.

Symptoms for Chlamydia and Gonorrhea:
For women, the symptoms include:

  • Bleeding between their menstrual cycles or after having sexual intercourse
  • Abdominal pain
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Painful or frequent urination
  • Abnormal vaginal discharge

For men, the symptoms aren't identifiable in most cases. If they have any symptoms, it includes:
  • White/yellow/greenish discharge
  • Pain or burning sensation during urination
  • Pain, tenderness, or swelling in the testicles

How to get tested?
The FDA-approved nucleic acid amplification test (NAAT) is used for Chlamydia and gonorrhea. It is recommended by most doctors for the detection of both Chlamydia and gonorrhea infection through urine testing. Naturally, if you have bacteria in your body, it can be detected in your urine. If the test comes back positive, it means that you have an active infection.

Are these diseases curable?
Yes, both these diseases have a specific treatment. Antibiotics are used as they are caused by bacteria. The only requirement is that you finish the entire course of antibiotics.

How often should I get tested for Chlamydia and Gonorrhea?
Doctors often recommend that a person should get tested for sexually transmitted diseases once they start indulging in an intimate relationship. It is advised that if you are tested positive for these infections and finished your treatments early, then test again after three months. This will ensure that the treatment was successful, and there were no long-term effects of the infections.
All sexually active men and women should get tested for Chlamydia and gonorrhea as they become sexually active. Getting tested every year will increase your chances of early detection. Hence, even if you don’t have any symptoms, the infections won't be able to harm your internal organs.
People who have multiple sexual partners have a high risk of getting infected. So, don't skip the tests and make sure that you don’t have a disease that can affect your entire reproductive system.
